  • “Future of Financial Markets” was discussed at the first conference of Center of Excellence in Finance (CEF)

    Center of Excellence in Finance (CEF) at Sabancı University, established with the founding sponsorship of Akbank, held a conference with the theme of “Developed and Emerging Economies: Future of Financial Markets” in Istanbul.

    The first conference of “Center of Excellence (CEF) at Sabancı University”, established with the founding sponsorship of Akbank and the aim of achieving “excellence in finance”, was held in Four Seasons Bosphorus Hotel in Istanbul on June 3, 2016.

    CEF conference brought real sector and finance sector representatives, policy makers, academicians and students together. Leading names in the financial world such as Prof. Dr. Turan Bali, Dr. Josef Ackermann, Suzan Sabancı Dinçer, Lord Stephen Green, Prof. Dr. Dante Roscini, Dr. Til Schuermann, Prof. Dr. Cliff Holderness, Sir Winfried Bischoff and Prof. Dr. Lawrence H. Summers participated in the conference. From the Turkish business world, Felix Faber, CEO of Shell & Turcas; Gökhan Öğüt, CEO of Vodafone Turkey and Mustafa Sani Şener, Board Member and President & CEO of TAV Airports shared their insights in the panels they attended.

    The first conference of CEF ended with the closing speech of Prof. Dr. Lawrence H. Summers, former US Secretary of Treasury. The opening speech was given by Suzan Sabancı Dinçer, the Chairman and Executive Board Member of Akbank. Prof. Dr. A. Nihat Berker, the President of Sabanci University, underlined Sabancı University’s happiness from the establishment of CEF in his speech. Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş, Chair Professor of Finance and Founding President of CEF highlighted that CEF will bring the most reputable people of the finance world together.

    During the morning panel entitled “Academic Perspectives on the Post-Crisis Global Economy” which took place with the moderation of Prof. Dr. Turan Bali, Chair Professor of Finance at Georgetown University; Dr. Til Schuerman, Ex SVP at FED of New York and Partner at Oliver Wyman; Prof. Dr. Cliff Holderness, finance professor at Boston College and Prof. Dr. Dante Roscini, professor of international economy at Harvard University shared their views on the future of global economies.

    Josef Ackermann has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Zurich Insurance Group since March 2012. Prior to his position as Chairman, he served as Vice-Chairman for two years. After obtaining his doctorate in 1977, he joined Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (SKA). In 1990, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of SKA, becoming its Chairman in 1993. In 1996, Mr. Ackermann joined the Management Board of Deutsche Bank AG; in 2002, he became the Spokesman of the Management Board and Chairman of the Group Executive Committee and between February 2006 and May 2012 he was the Chairman of the Management Board.

    Mr. Ackermann is a Member of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG, Germany (Second Deputy Chairman), a Member of the Board of Directors of Royal Dutch Shell, the Netherlands and of Investor AB, Sweden, as well as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Belenos Clean Power Holding Ltd, Biel. He also plays an active role in the World Economic Forum (Co-Chairman of the Foundation Board), the St. Gallen Foundation for International Studies (Chairman), the Foundation Lindau Nobelprizewinners Meetings at Lake Constance (Honorary Senate Member) and the Metropolitan Opera New York (Advisory Director). In 2007, Mr. Ackermann accepted an appointment as visiting professor in finance at the London School of Economics. In July 2008, he was appointed as Honorary Professor at Frankfurt’s Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. Furthermore, he is an Honorary Fellow of the London Business School and holds an Honorary Doctorate from the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece. Mr. Ackermann studied economics and social sciences at the University of St. Gallen and received his PhD in 1977.

    Turan G. Bali is the Robert S. Parker Chair Professor of Finance at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. He received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York in 1999. Before joining Georgetown University, Professor Bali was the David Krell Chair Professor of Finance at Baruch College and the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. He also held visiting faculty positions at New York University and Princeton University, reviewed books for several publishers, and served on the review committees of the National Science Foundation, Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

    Professor Bali specializes in asset pricing, risk management, fixed income securities, and financial derivatives. A founding member of the Society for Financial Econometrics, he has worked on consulting projects sponsored by major financial institutions and government organizations in the U.S. and other countries. In addition, he currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Futures Markets, the Review of Financial Economics, the Journal of Portfolio Management, and the Journal of Risk.

    Professor Bali published 3 books and more than 70 articles in economics and finance journals. Bali’s work has more than 4,000 citations in Google Scholar and appeared in top academic journals, such as the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Monetary Economics, Management Science, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Business, and the Review of Economics and Statistics. He also serves as a reviewer for numerous journals in economics, finance, statistics, and operations research.

    Prof. Dr. A. Nihat Berker

    Sabancı University President and MIT Emeritus Professor of Physics Nihat Berker received his double BS degrees (1971) in Physics and Chemistry from MIT, his MS (1972) and PhD (1977) degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard University (1977-79).

    He was a Faculty Member at MIT in 1979-2004. He was an MIT Professor in 1988-2004 and has been an MIT Emeritus Professor since 2004. He is the recipient of the MIT Department of Physics Buechner Teaching Prize (1987), the Science Award of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey TÜBITAK (1988), the Fellowship of the American Physical Society (1988-), the MIT School of Science Teaching Prize for Excellence in Graduate Education (1995), the Outstanding Turkish Scientist Citation of the Academy of Sciences of Turkey (1996), the Humboldt Research Award (2007), the Best Teacher of the Year of KoçPost Student Newspaper (2008). He is a member of the Academy of Sciences of Turkey (1999-) and of Academia Europaea (2011-). He is the founder (2003) and Director of the MIT-Turkey Freshman Scholars Program. As of February 2016, he has 139 scientific publications and 5515 scientific citations.

    Berker is an Energy Faculty at the MIT Energy Initiative and a Steering Committee Member of the Sabancı University Istanbul International Climate and Energy Center (IICEC). Even as University President, he has continued his research in statistical mechanics and his every-semester teaching, including the courses “Phase Transitions and Renormalization-Group Theory”, “Statistical Physics”, “World Energy Outlook: The Coming Year”, “Water: Its Physics, Nanophysics, Chemistry, and Geopolitics”, “Alcibiades and Philoctetes: Individual’s Talents and Rights in an Oligarchical Society”, “Fantasy, Reality, Science, and Society”.

    He has developed the Sabancı University Summer School for High School Students, which was for example attended in the summer of 2015 by 991 high school students taking 43 university classes.

     Hakan Binbaşgil

    Hakan Binbaşgil joined Akbank as the Executive Vice President in charge of Change Management in October 2002. He initiated the Bank's "Restructuring Programme" which has transformed Akbank into one of Turkey's most customer-focused, modern and innovative financial institutions. Hakan Binbaşgil was appointed Executive Vice President in charge of Retail Banking in November 2003, Deputy CEO in May 2008, and since January 2012 as Board Member and Chief Executive Officer of the Bank.

    Prior to joining Akbank, Binbaşgil worked as a Management Consultant in the London and Istanbul offices of Accenture, and as Executive Vice President in a different private sector bank. Binbaşgil also served on the boards of directors of numerous companies domestically and abroad.

    After graduating from Robert College, Hakan Binbaşgil graduated from Bosphorus University, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Binbaşgil also holds MBA and MS degrees in Finance from Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge, USA.

     Sir Winfried Bischoff

    Sir Winfried Bischoff is the the Non-Executive Chairman of J.P Morgan Securities. He is also currently the Chairman of the Financial Reporting Council in the UK. He was previously Chairman of Lloyds Banking Group from 2009. Sir Win has substantial experience of leading complex international boards in the UK and the US. His background spans a range of sectors, including banking and capital markets, finance and government regulation and public policy. He is a Non-Executive Director of McGraw Hill Financial Inc., and was Chairman of the Advisory Council of TheCityUK.

    Sir Win was appointed Chairman of Citigroup Europe in 2000. He became the acting Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup Inc. in 2007 and was subsequently appointed as Chairman in the same year until his retirement in February 2009. Prior to this, he was the Group Chief Executive and then Chairman of Schroders. Sir Win holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He has held a total of 10 publically listed company directorships since 1983.

    Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş

    K. Ozgur Demirtas is a Chair Professor of Finance at the Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey. Professor Demirtas received his BS degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bogazici University in Istanbul. He received his Ph.D. in Finance degree from Boston College in 2003. In the same year, he was appointed as a tenure-track assistant professor at Baruch College, City University of New York. In 2003, he earned the best teaching award within the finance department; in 2004, he earned the best teaching award in the Business School; in 2005, he was elected as the best teacher within all departments and the schools of the University and received the Presidential Teaching Excellence Award. He published in prestigious academic journals (Journal of Monetary Economics, Management Science, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and Journal of Business Economic and Statistics). He has more than 30 academic publications.

    In 2007, he earned a tenured position in US. In 2010, he was listed within top 20 professors out of more than 1 million professors in US, UK, Canada and Scotland. More than 10 million student evaluations are used for the rankings.

    In 2012, he joined Sabanci University as a chair professor of finance. As of 2014, in addition to his academic role, he is holding a founding chairman position of the Center of Excellence in Finance at Sabanci University.

    Professor Demirtas, is also a founding board member of the first Financial Literacy Association of Turkey (FODER), and was a senior consultant of Young Businessmen Association of Turkey (TUGIAD), Association of Automotive Parts & Components Manufacturers (TAYSAD), Turkish Natural Catastrophe Insurance Pool (DASK), as well as several corporations. In a two year period between 2014 and 2015, he gave more than 70 Keynote Speeches to local and international corporations.

     Suzan Sabancı

    Suzan Sabancı is the Chairman of Akbank. Ms. Sabancı is also a board member of Sabancı Holding and a member of the Board of Trustees of Sabancı University and the Sabancı Foundation. In 2009, Ms Sabanci founded the Akbank International Advisory Board and currently serves as its chairman.

    Suzan Sabancı began her career in banking in 1986 and joined Akbank as Executive Vice President in charge of Treasury in 1989. Having specialized in Treasury and Risk Management, she has been active in these two subjects since 1993. In 1997, she was named Executive Board Member for Treasury and International Banking Relations. Ms Sabancı was appointed as Executive Board Member to oversee the bank-wide change and transition program in 2001. She was named Chairman in March, 2008.

    Ms. Sabancı is a member of the Institute of International Finance Board of Directors and Emerging Markets Advisory Board, Harvard University’s Global Advisory Council, Harvard Business School’s Global Leaders Circle, and an emeritus member of the Harvard Business School’s Middle East and North Africa Advisory Board. Suzan Sabancı is also co-chair of the New York-based American-Turkish Society, as well as a member of the Global Board of Advisors at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the Board of Managing Directors of Venetian Heritage, Inc, and the Cultural and Social Affairs Committee of the Serpentine Council respectively.

    From 2010 to 2014, Suzan Sabancı served as the chairman of the Turkish-British Business Council for two terms. From 2009 to 2016, Ms. Sabancı sat on the Global Board of Advisors of Chatham House and she is currently a member of the Chatham House Chairman’s Circle. In 2012, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II awarded Ms. Sabancı the title of "Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE)" in recognition of her proactive and influential contributions to the development of Turkey-UK relations. Having previously served as an Advisory Board Member for The Prince's Charities, Ms. Sabancı is currently a Patron of Prince’s Trust International, a highly prestigious charity organisation set up by King Charles III, then The Prince of Wales, in 1976 and aimed at promoting the development of young people.

    Suzan Sabancı is strongly committed to corporate social responsibility activities and assumes various positions in the fields of culture, education, and the promotion of entrepreneurship. Between 2014 and 2018, Sabancı acted as the Advisory Board President of the Women on Board Association Turkey, dedicated to promoting social development by increasing female representation on boards. She is a founding member and board member of the leading high-impact entrepreneurship movement, Endeavor Turkey, a founding and honorary member of the Women Entrepreneurs Association of Turkey, and chairman of the Executive Advisory Board and member of the board of patrons of the Contemporary Istanbul Art Fair. Ms. Sabancı acted as Luxembourg’s Honorary Consul in Istanbul between 2005 and 2022 for 17 years. In 2014, Ms. Sabancı was given the Order of Civil Merit (Orden del Mérito Civil) of the Kingdom of Spain by King Felipe VI of Spain for her contributions to the relations between the two countries and for her support to the cultural convergence.

    Suzan Sabancı holds a BA in Finance from Richmond College in the UK and an MBA from Boston University in the USA. Ms. Sabancı has two children.

    Felix Faber joined Shell in 1996. Mr. Faber’s career spans sales, marketing, strategy and finance experiences in and outside Europe and has lived 5 years in London. He has held a number of commercial roles including Global Marine Pricing Manager, Commercial Fuels Cluster Business Manager for DACH (Germany, Switzerland and Austria region) and Managing Director euroShell Germany. In September 2011 Faber became General Manager of North Europe Lubricants and Managing Director of Shell Deutschland Schmierstoff GmbH. He holds a masters degree in Business Administration (Management Organization and Marketing).. Mr. Faber is married with two children and was born in Hamburg..

    Stephen Green was educated at Lancing College, Sussex, and at Oxford University where he graduated in 1969 with a BA (First Class Honours) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. He also obtained a Masters Degree in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975. He was created a Life Peer in 2010 and was appointed Minister of State for Trade and Investment in January 2011. He retired from this position in December 2013.

    Lord Green began his career in 1970 with the British Government’s Ministry of Overseas Development. In 1977, he joined McKinsey & Co Inc, management consultants, with whom he undertook assignments in Europe, North America and the Middle East.

    He joined The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in 1982 with responsibility for corporate planning activities, and in 1985 was put in charge of the development of the bank’s global treasury operations. In 1992, he became Group Treasurer of HSBC Holdings plc with responsibility for the HSBC Group’s treasury and capital markets businesses globally. In 1998, he was appointed to the Board of HSBC Holdings plc as an Executive Director. He became Group Chief Executive in 2003 and Group Chairman 2006. He retired from HSBC in December 2010.

    Lord Green was Chairman of the British Bankers’ Association from 2006 to 2010. He also served as a Trustee of the British Museum. He served as a non-executive director of BASF.se until 2010.

    He is Chairman of the Natural History Museum, Chairman of the International Advisory Council of the British Chambers of Commerce and is a member of the House of Lords EU Select Committee.

    Stephen Green has written four books – Serving God? Serving Mammon? [1996]; Good Value, Choosing a Better Life in Business [2009]; Reluctant Meister – How Germany’s Past is Shaping its European Future [2014]; and The European Identity – Historical and Cultural Realities We Cannot Deny [2015].

    Stephen Green is married with two daughters.

    Prof. Dr. Cliff Holderness

    Clifford G. Holderness is Professor of Finance at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. He has research interests in corporate governance and corporate finance and a special research interest on the role of large-block shareholders in public corporations. The topics he has written on include the pricing of large blocks of stock, the role of large shareholders in public corporations around the world, and the protection of minority shareholders from oppression by large shareholders. He has published in leading scholarly journals, including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Law & Economics, and the Journal of Legal Studies.

    Professor Holderness won the Brattle Prize for the best paper in corporate finance published in the Journal of Finance in 1999. Five of his papers have been re-printed in collections of scholarly papers. Another paper was honored by the editors of the Journal of Financial Economics as an All Star Paper because of how often it has been cited by other researchers.

    Professor Holderness holds a M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics and a J.D. and A.B. in Economics (with Honors and Distinction), both from Stanford University.

    Gökhan Öğüt is appointed as the CEO of Vodafone Turkey effective as of November 2013.

    Prior to his current role, he worked as the Chief Marketing Officer for Vodafone Turkey between October 2009 and May 2012, and as Chief Consumer Business Unit Officer between May 2012 and October 2013.

    Öğüt joined Vodafone Turkey from Nutricia Medical Nutrition Company, where he was the General Manager between 2008 and 2009, after holding various local and global marketing directorate roles in Danone Turkey and Groupe Danone Headquarters in France from 2001 to 2008.

    Between 2000-2001, Öğüt was the Director of Marketing and Communications of Ilab Holding, internet venture capital Company. Gökhan Öğüt began his career in 1995 in Procter&Gamble where he held several brand management roles both in the USA and Turkey.

    Gökhan Öğüt currently serves on the Boards of YASED (International Investors Association) and BÜVAK (Boğaziçi University Foundation).

    Öğüt is member of TÜSİAD (Turkish Industry and Businessmen Association) and he sits on the Advisory Council of TURYİD (Turkish Restaurant & Entertainment Association)
    Öğüt was elected as the “#1 Marketing Person of the Year” in 2010 by Capital Magazine.

    Gökhan Öğüt holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from Boğaziçi University and an MBA from University of Illinois at Chicago. He is married with 2 children.

    Prof. Dr. Dante Roscini

    Dante Roscini teaches the elective course Managing International Trade and Investment in the Business, Government and the International Economy Unit. He joined the Harvard Business School faculty in 2008 and has published a number of cases and notes related to sovereign debt, monetary policy, central banking and international investment. He holds an M.B.A. from Harvard and a summa cum laude Laurea degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Rome, Italy. Before coming back to HBS Prof. Roscini spent twenty years in investment banking with senior positions at three of the top US bulge bracket firms in New York and London.

    He was Head of European Capital Markets for Goldman Sachs, Head of Global Equity Capital Markets and Head of the European Capital Markets and Financing Group for Merrill Lynch where he was also a member of the Capital Commitments Committee and of the Managing Directors Promotions Committee. Finally, he was Country Head of Italy and Chairman of European Capital Markets for Morgan Stanley as well as a board member of Morgan Stanley International Bank. He is currently a member of the board or the advisory board of several companies. He is a fellow of the Foreign Policy Association in New York, a Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council in Washington and a member of Chatham House in London. He consults and lectures globally and collaborates with several newspapers.

    Prof. Roscini has broad transaction and management experience in the areas of corporate finance, M&A, and private equity as well as in private wealth and asset management. His particular professional expertise is in the global capital markets where he has worked with governments, public and private companies in many countries to assess capital structures and help them hedge risk or raise equity and debt financing. He has personally led over 100 capital raising transactions that included privatizations, Initial Public Offerings, hybrid equity offerings and private placements. Several of these were “first of a kind” in terms of their size or of the type of security issued. Prior to his career in investment banking Prof. Roscini worked as a researcher in nuclear archaeometry at the University of Rome, as a design engineer and project manager with Westinghouse Electric Corp. in the US and as a management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group in Paris.

    Til Schuermann re‐joined Oliver Wyman in August 2011 as a Partner in the Finance & Risk and Public Policy practices. He was previously with the firm from 1996 – 2001. His current focus is on stress testing, capital planning, enterprise‐wide risk management and corporate governance including board education:

    • Stress testing and capital planning support for more than two dozen US and foreign banks and three large non‐bank financials
    • Stress testing of Spanish (2012) and Slovenian (2013) banking systems; European AQR (2014)
    • Supporting European multi‐lateral in banking system stress testing and restructuring
    • Board of Directors training on effective challenge for 7 U.S. financial institutions

    Until March 2011, Til was a Senior Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York where he held numerous positions, including head of Financial Intermediation in Research and head of Credit Risk in Bank Supervision. In Spring 2009, he played a leadership role in the design and execution of the Supervisory Capital Assessment Program (SCAP – bank stress test), and the subsequent Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) programs.

    Til received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993, and his BA in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1988. From 1993 – 1996 he worked at Bell Laboratories. He has numerous publications in both academic and practitioner journals, is an associate editor of the Journal of Financial Services Research and the Journal of Risk, is a member of the advisory board of the NYU Courant Institute Mathematical Finance program, and has taught at the Wharton School, where he is a Research Fellow, and at Columbia University.

    Prof. Dr. Lawrence H. Summers

    Lawrence H. Summers is the Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus of Harvard University. During the past two decades, he has served in a series of senior policy positions in Washington, D.C., including the 71st Secretary of the Treasury for President Clinton, Director of the National Economic Council for President Obama and Vice President of Development Economics and Chief Economist of the World Bank.

    He received a bachelor of science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975 and was awarded a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1982. In 1983, he became one of the youngest individuals in recent history to be named as a tenured member of the Harvard University faculty. In 1987, Mr. Summers became the first social scientist ever to receive the annual Alan T. Waterman Award of the National Science Foundation (NSF), and in 1993 he was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, given every two years to the outstanding American economist under the age of 40.

    He is currently the Charles W. Eliot University Professor at Harvard University and the Weil Director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business & Government at Harvard’s Kennedy School. He and his wife Elisa New, a professor of English at Harvard, reside in Brookline with their six children.

    Mustafa Sani Şener

    Mustafa Sani Şener was appointed member of the Board of Directors, President and CEO of TAV Airports in 1997. After graduating from Black Sea Technical University (KTÜ,) Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1977, Mr. Şener earned his Master’s degree (M.Phil) in fluid mechanics in 1979 from University of Sussex in the UK. He has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in engineering from KTÜ for his invaluable contributions to the development of Turkish engineering at the international level, as well as an Honorary Doctorate in business administration from the Hellenic American University for his accomplishments in Project and Risk Management throughout his tenure at TAV.

    Prior to his career at TAV Airports Holding, Mr. Şener served in various positions, from project manager to general manager, in many national and international projects. He attended training on management of complex systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT.) Mustafa Sani Şener is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Airports Council International (ACI) Europe and was elected the President of Foreign Economic Relations Board’s Turkish-French Business Council in 2012.
